It’s a Kind of Magic: Why the Wand Vibrator is Such a Wizard
Good evening, sensation-seekers!
The wand vibrator - also commonly known as the Magic Wand - is one of the most iconic sex toys on the market. Today I’m going to explore why it’s such a popular bedroom accessory, and how it has helped women all over the world to unlock new levels of pleasure through clitoral stimulation.
What is a wand vibrator?
It’s a wand-shaped toy that’s designed to stimulate the clitoris with vibration. Powered either by mains electricity or batteries, it contains a motor that causes the rounded head to vibrate in just the right way to excite the clitoral area and induce a clitoral orgasm (more on this later).
Unlike some other vibrators, it is not used inside the vagina, making it an appealing option for those who prefer the delicate sensations of clitoral play. It’s also relatively non-phallic in shape, and has been praised as a key player in the story of female sexual liberation.
How does it work?
It’s pretty straightforward. Simply hold the rounded head against your clitoris, applying as much or little pressure as you want, and press go. Because it doesn’t go inside you, it’s a perfect first sex toy for those seeking to ease themselves in gently. It’s great for solo play and also for use with a partner.
Where can I buy one?
Right here! There are several wonderful options available from our website - the Lelo Smart Rechargeable Wands (available in large or medium), the Doxy Extra Powerful Die Cast Massage Wand Vibrator, and my personal favourite, the Rocks-Off Oriel Wand Vibrator.
I’ll talk you through these options later, so stay tuned!
What’s the story of the wand vibrator?
Like so much of the female sexual liberation movement, there’s a great story behind the wand vibrator. It’s become an iconic symbol of female sexual pleasure since its invention in the 1960s, and is now a staple in many bedrooms across the world.
Originally marketed as a body massager by its manufacturer Hitachi, women quickly discovered its merits as a sex toy, and the product was essentially hijacked by the feminist movement as a tool of female empowerment.
Because of its branding as an everyday household appliance, it was relatively easy for women to buy a Magic Wand without raising too many eyebrows. It opened up possibilities for sexual exploration that had previously not been available to women, and had a hand in leading to the establishment of pioneering high-street shops such as Ann Summers. It even made a guest appearance on Sex and the City [NSFW video].
The wand became the hero of a number of sex workshops and ground-breaking books, including Joani Blank’s Good Vibrations: Being a Treatise on the Use of Machines in the Indolent Indulgence of Erotic Pleasure-Seeking Together with Important Hints on the Acquisition, Care, and Utilization of Said Machines and Much More about the Art and Science of Buzzing Off. I challenge you to reach orgasm before you get to the end of that title.
In 2012, Hitachi decided they no longer wanted to be associated with the product, and dropped their name from the brand. Fortunately for us, several other manufacturers have taken up the mantle, and now there are a range of exciting models to choose from.
Thanks to the internet and online shops like ours, it’s now so much easier to buy sex toys without being judged or caused to feel embarrassment. But let’s raise a glass to our sisters in the 60s, who gamed the market to find sexual pleasure in a world where it was largely denied to them.
What’s the difference between a clitoral orgasm and a vaginal orgasm?
That’s a good question, and many people don’t realise there is a difference. Nor do many realise that there are actually several different types of female orgasm.
As you might expect, a clitoral orgasm is caused by stimulation to the clitoris, while a vaginal orgasm is generally caused by penetration and massage of the inner vaginal walls, cervix and the famous G-spot.
Clitoral orgasms begin with pleasure in that particular area, but often result in a profoundly holistic, full-body experience. Vaginal orgasms, usually as the result of stimulating the G-spot or cervix, are generally described as deeper sensations.
There is no right or wrong way to orgasm. Some women prefer one method over the others; some women can only achieve orgasm in certain ways; and others are unable to reach orgasm at all, but still experience a great deal of sexual pleasure.
How do I achieve a clitoral orgasm?
Historically, the clitoris has largely been ignored, because it offers male partners no immediate gratification. But it is a vitally important area of sexual pleasure for most women, and some prefer clitoral stimulation over the pleasure of penetration.
Today, the importance of the clitoris is much celebrated, and I’m extremely happy to jump on that bandwagon.
The clitoris is the only part of the body whose sole purpose is to provide pleasure. It literally has no other purpose, and that’s a beautiful thing. While clitoral stimulation is rarely talked about in sex education classes, women have been championing this form of orgasm for decades.
There’s a joke that the clitoris is notoriously difficult to find, but I believe that’s an excuse given by people who aren’t that interested in finding it. The clitoris is located right at the top of the vulva. It’s often hood-like in appearance, and the visible part is around the size of a small coin (sizes do vary from woman to woman). Explore around the area with your fingers - you can identify the clitoris by the immediate pleasure it causes when you touch it.
Clitoral orgasms can be achieved by various forms of stimulation, including gentle manual massage, fast vibration, powerful showers, oral (tongue and mouth) massage and more. Experiment to find what works best for you.
Spectacular results can be achieved by combining different types of stimulation. When the G-spot and the clitoris are stimulated at the same time, women can achieve volcanic orgasms that cause pleasurable convulsions and ejaculation (yes, female ejaculation is real).
Toys like the Magic Wand can help with this, enabling you to maintain steady vibrations on your clitoris while you are penetrated either by a partner or another toy. You don’t even need to target the clitoris directly, as the vibrations near the area can be enough to buzz you to orgasm.

Don’t just take my word for it. Let’s hear from one of our discerning customers:
“Amazing! I was told to get this one and not disappointed. Very good price compared to all other websites. It's not as quiet as I thought it would be having seen previous reviews where it said it was very quiet (it isn't) but that is the only negative thing I have to say.”
Have Fun!
I hope this article has inspired you to explore the magical sensations a wand vibrator can offer. As such a famous figure in the history of female sexual exploration, it deserves a spot in your bedroom drawer. As always, have fun exploring, engaging and enjoying your bodies. I’ll see you next time!
